Right now, Netflix India’s top position is taken by a movie that critics panned. On the 21st of August, FlixPatrol had Cocktail 2 in the top spot, and on Rotten Tomatoes it was carrying 23% from critics against 69% from audiences.
Most of what happened in August is rather positive. There are two newly released Hindi films that came out the same day. There is a documentary about Boeing from an Oscar nominated director. There was also the finale of Outer Banks after five action-packed seasons.
If you only have room for three this month:
- Operation Safed Sagar is the critics’ pick. A Kargil war series that two reviewers praised for its restraint.
- Main Vaapas Aaunga is the box office story. Imtiaz Ali on partition, and its second weekend beat its first by 115%.
- Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing is the documentary. Rory Kennedy on the death of a Boeing whistleblower.
This is more of a release guide than a review. The information presented below is gathered from the Netflix website, and the published critiques, as well as trade reporting. Ratings and positions on charts are constantly changing, and carry the date they were last checked on.
The three worth your time
Operation Safed Sagar
This Hindi series ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ has six episodes and it was released on 7 August 2026, which is directed by Oni Sen.
This focuses on the Indian Air Force during the Kargil War and the Golden Arrows Squadron. The series is led by Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill with Abhay Verma.
The reviews make this the highlight of the month. Shubhra Gupta praised the series in the Indian Express by giving it three and a half stars and calling it a series that “soars with zero jingoism.” Sukanya Verma praised the series in Rediff with the title “Eye In The Sky, Feet On Ground.”
That restraint is rare. War stories from India tend to arrive with a flag draped over them, but two separate critics have said this one does not.
Main Vaapas Aaunga
It is a Hindi film with a runtime of 2 hours and 47 minutes which is available on Netflix from 7 August after its theatrical release starting 12 June.
Imtiaz Ali directed it. Naseeruddin Shah plays a 95 year old man. He tells his grandson, played by Diljit Dosanjh, the story of the woman he lost when the country was partitioned in 1947. Sharvari and Vedang Raina play the younger versions of that story.
What is noteworthy is the box office run. According to Bollywood Hungama, the second weekend was ₹12.12 crore compared to the first weekend at ₹5.63 crore, a 115% surge which is almost unheard of for a Hindi release. Trade trackers estimate the worldwide lifetime total to be somewhere between ₹94 crore to ₹98 crore and do not completely align with one another.
It was still at number three on the India chart on 21 August, weeks after its theatrical run had ended.
Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing
It is a documentary with a runtime of 93 minutes which was released on the 19th of August 2026. It is directed by Rory Kennedy.
Kennedy made a documentary on Boeing in 2022 titled Downfall. This is the follow up, and it is built around the death of John Barnett. He is a Boeing quality control manager who had spent years raising safety concerns about the 787 production line.
Barnett died on 9 March 2024, the day he was due to appear for his third day of deposition in the retaliation case against the company. The Charleston County Coroner ruled the death a suicide. Boeing is the subject of the lawsuit that Barnett’s family filed as part of a wrongful death case. This is where the movie begins.
Kennedy’s films are not a piece of cake. This film also falls in the same category which is not easy to digest.
What else arrived, and what is still to come
As of 22 August, here are the films that are worth some attention rather than listing everything. Compared to Netflix’s own monthly listing, this one is much more concise.

Two of those are worth a line of their own.
The final season of Outer Banks added on 20 August with all ten episodes at once. The creators have always said that they expected the show would run for five seasons. So we can be sure that this is the finale, unlike many other cancellations.
Pyaar Prema Kalyanam was released on Netflix on 21 August 2026, with no theatrical release. Directed by and starring Elan, in this film, a bride refuses to leave the family house, so the groom moves into the family house instead. Radikaa Sarathkumar and Yogi Babu are in the film as well.
The one that divided everyone
Cocktail 2 was released on 14 August 2026 and within a week topped Netflix India’s film chart.
It premiered on 19 June 2026 in theatres and ranks 6th on Bollywood Hungama’s list of the year’s highest grossing Hindi releases so far. Directed by Homi Adajania, the film stars Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna, and it did well at the box office.
It did not impress critics much. It had a Tomatometer score of 23% when checked on 22 August, and reviews mostly criticized it for the same reason, which is that the film keeps swinging between style and substance without settling on either. Audiences liked it a great deal more, giving it 69% on the Popcornmeter.
So it really depends upon what you want to watch and which type of plot you like. Everyone has their own taste, so it will be good to watch yourself and then judge rather than blindly trust the reviews. To some extent, you can trust the audience’s score. If you want the film to make sense, then the critics play an important role, and Main Vaapas Aaunga is available on the same service from the previous Friday.
Still worth watching from July
Musafir Cafe premiered on 24th July with 8 episodes in Hindi. On the strength of the first season, Netflix renewed it for a second season in August.
Super Subbu was released on 2 July and is worth checking out if you have been frustrated that Netflix does not offer anything in Telugu. It is a comedy drama series in seven episodes. The series is about a teacher posted to a village to teach the one subject nobody there wants taught.
If you are still working out whether Netflix is the service to pay for at all, we compared it against Prime Video and JioHotstar on price, resolution and what you actually get for the money in our subscription comparison.
